White Rock Rowing White Rock Rowing

John and Anne Mullen Annual Scholarship Award

John Mullen is one of the founding fathers of rowing in the Dallas area. In addition to being one of the founders of White Rock Boathouse, Inc., John was instrumental in creating the Dallas Rowing Club on Bachman Lake, whose boathouse bears his name. John had organized collegiate regattas on White Rock Lake in the 1980s and had the vision to bring a club and rowing back to its waters. John did this by providing the guidance, the funding, the architectural design, and the political know-how, in addition to literally getting his feet wet and his hand's dirty building docks and other infrastructure. Further, it was John's experience as a rower, the coach of young rowers, and as the father of a rower, that motivated him to build a club to introduce rowing to the youth of the City of Dallas. In so doing, he has provided them with an opportunity to develop and experience teamwork, commitment, hard work, responsibility, competition and the pursuit of excellence that participation in crew can provide. This award is presented to junior athletes of White Rock Rowing who exemplify just these qualities. It is the participation of these individuals in the mission of White Rock Boathouse, Inc., that sets a foundation for those who come after them to excel.

Selection Process:

The selection is not contingent on continued participation in rowing at the collegiate level, it is intended to assist students in their continuing education. This award is not necessarily meant to be bestowed upon the fastest rowers (although this may be the case) but to honor the rowers who exemplify teamwork, commitment, responsibility, competition and the pursuit of excellence in rowing. The recipients will be selected by the juniors head coach and varsity coaching staff.

The Scholarship Award:

The annual scholarship award is given to one senior boy, one senior girl, and each will receive $1,000.

Presentation:

The recipients will be announced at the Junior Crew's banquet in May; the award will be kept private until that time. Follow-up: Award recipients will be asked to return to speak to White Rock Rowing's junior crew about their post-high-school experiences.
